Engineering Department
"Fire Fire . . . . away the nucleus fire party!"
blares the 1MC and members of Repair Division are
on their way to combat one of the many emergencies
which occur aboard an aircraft carrier on deployment.
When not holding fire or flooding drills. Repair
Division is busy maintaining the hull, ship's boats
and hundreds of miles of piping throughout the ship.
A scored motorshaft, a padeye knocked off the hull
by heavy weather, a crack in the jet-blast deflector,
all are but a fraction of the many tasks performed by
the shipfitter shop.
The miles and miles of various pipes aboard
INDEPENDENCE are maintained by the pipe shop,
and repairs on the ship's boats are made by the
carpenter shop.
R Division also provides the expertise for training
the 800-man damage control and repair party
organization and also provides the operational
equipment to combat the most severe damage.
