1959 * Ship's Band
U.S.S. INDEPENDENCE CVA-62
"Prior to the arrival of the "INDY's" first flag
in December 1959, there existed a Ships Band"
U.S.S. Independence Ship's Band - 1959 Rehersal
This band was made up of Ship's Company.
There had been a request put out for musicians.
The "INDY" had a supply of instruments that
were kept in a locker one deck below where
this photo was taken.
At the time of the photo, I was the Drummer
and the Director of the band.
The original Director who also was the driving
force behind forming the band, had left the ship.
I became Director because of having a 14 piece
dance band while in High School.
When the "INDY's first Flag came aboard,
so did an Official Navy Band. and that was
the end of the
"U.S.S. Independence Ship's Band."
